Note Grossing up VAT refers to the process of calculating the total amount of a transaction, including the value-added tax (VAT) that is charged on the goods or services. When a company or individual purchases goods or services that are subject to VAT, the VAT amount is usually added to the price of the goods or services. However, when the purchaser is unable to recover the VAT paid (such as in the case of non-VAT registered businesses or individuals), the supplier may gross up the VAT by calculating the total amount that includes the VAT, so that the purchaser can pay the total amount without having to separately pay the VAT.
      💡
Example If a product costs $100 and the VAT rate is 20%, the VAT amount would be $20, making the total cost $120. If the purchaser is unable to recover the VAT, the supplier may gross up the VAT by charging the purchaser $120, which includes the $20 VAT.
